At Apple’s event yesterday, many had expected (based on the rumors) that the company would unveil a refreshed Mac mini. Given that it has been more than a year since the last Mac mini was announced, it did seem like the right time. Instead, we got treated to the Mac Studio, a more powerful version of the Mac mini with a new M1 Ultra chipset.

Now according to a report from 9to5Mac, Apple’s Mac mini refresh is still in the pipeline and that according to what they’ve heard, the computer is expected to come with the M2 chipset. They also note that there could be another variant offered with a more (presumably) powerful version called the M2 Pro.

The report claims that the M2 Mac mini’s development is nearing completion and that it could actually be announced later this year. This report is actually a little confusing because we had heard an earlier report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who clamed that Apple is also expected to refresh the MacBook Air, but it will continue to use the M1 chipset.

We’re not sure why Apple would continue to use the M1 in the MacBook Air if they are planning to use the M2 in the Mac mini. It is possible that the MacBook Air refresh could see the use of the M1 variants like the M1 Pro and M1 Max, which would still make it an upgrade, but either way it’s probably best to take this with a grain of salt for now.
