‘I want to see this problem crushed’ – Mike Schroepfer, Facebook’s tech chief, on taming the monster he helped create


Mike Schroepfer’s role at Facebook has changed a lot from its original job description.

“When I was studying computer science in the Nineties I didn’t think detecting terrorist videos was how I would be using those skills in the real world,” he says.

Facebook’s chief technology officer is part of the small cadre who hold real power at the centre of $540bn (£432bn) social networking giant.

Over more than a decade at Mark Zuckerberg’s side he helped deliver the now-infamous “move fast and break things” growth strategy. Today, chastened by scandal and regulatory pressure, Schroepfer finds himself an accidental general in a digital war against hate.
