P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro were Huawei’s two flagship smartphones for 2018 – both devices boast a great camera system, a hefty battery and deliver swift performance.
We were fans of both flagships at Express.co.uk – we awarded each five out of five stars in our respective reviews.
Since launching, the P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro have both been treated to consistent updates from Huawei – the latest software for both at the moment is EMUI 9.1 that is based on Google’s Android 9 Pie operating system.
However, both flagships are set to be upgraded to the American firm’s new Android 10 interface in the future.
Google released Android 10 on September 3 for its Pixel line of smartphones – a small number of other devices have also been granted the new software at the time of writing.
Android 10 makes a number of seismic changes to the operating system – chief of which is a system-wide dark mode that ensures most native apps will adopt black and grey tones when enabled.
Improved notifications, new permissions and revamped gesture navigations are just some of the other notable features present in Android 10.
To be expected, Huawei smartphones will not run Google’s version of Android 10 – instead they will rely on the firm’s new EMUI 10 skin that is based on the new operating system.
EMUI 10 was unveiled during Huawei’s recent Developer Conference held in the industrial Chinese city of Dongguan – Express.co.uk attended the event and was able to go hands-on with the skin.
EMUI 10 is most striking for its new aesthetic that places the majority of content in native apps towards the middle and bottom of a phone display.
Just like Samsung’s One UI software, this makes it easier to navigate larger devices overall.
Huawei’s latest and greatest software also totes a traditional app drawer, a new dark mode and improved camera software.

Although Huawei had previously expressed confidence its P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro handsets would be granted Android 10 – it had previously been unknown when such an update would debut for the 2018 devices.
P20 Pro fans will have to wait a little longer for the upgrade – Huawei said it anticipates the hardware to be granted EMUI 10 in March of 2020.
